To Koritsi Tis Stahtis
Kalavryta, December 13th, 1943.
Nazi machine guns take lives and paint the town and the fields red. Nothing is left standing. Little is left breathing. There is only blood, death, ash, mourning, fear. Even the sun and birds hide away.
Five-year-old Paraskevi feels like she is losing her mind, her spirit. Hiding with her brothers in the mountain, she mourns her murdered father. When the Bishop invites the families to give up their children for adoption and send them to Australia, Paraskevi raises her shaking hand and cries out: “I’ll go to… Astralia!”. Her mother’s face pales as she feels the blood drain from her.
A Dakota with the name of “Wind” takes over the rest of this heartwrenching story as the young girl climbs on board and sets off for her journey.
A true, heartbreaking story that begins in the destroyed by the Nazis Greek mountain village of Kalavryta, and tells of the power of human spirit as seen in the life of an inspiring woman, Vivian Stephanou.
